Job Description
ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION
The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI)[https://ahri.gov.et/], established in 1970, is a globally recognized public health research institution based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Under its Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases (MNTD) Directorate, AHRI collaborates with international partners to address pressing public health challenges.
As part of the Skin Health Africa Research Program (SHARP), AHRI has collected qualitative data through community dialogues (CD); focus group discussions (FGDs), in-depth interviews (IDIs), and key informant interviews (KIIs). These activities aim to improve awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) and other skin diseases. To facilitate data analysis, the MNTD Directorate at AHRI seeks skilled professionals to transcribe Amharic audio recordings and translate them into English.
JOB SUMMARY
The Transcriber and Translator will:
- Transcribe Amharic audio recordings into written Amharic text.
- Translate the transcribed Amharic text into accurate and culturally relevant English.
- Collaborate with researchers and ensure the timely delivery of high-quality outputs.
This role is essential for ensuring that community insights are effectively captured and analyzed to inform public health interventions.
Scope of Work:
The responsibilities include:
- Transcription: Listening to audio recordings in Amharic and contextually transcribing them verbatim into Amharic text.
- Translation: Translating the transcribed text into clear, concise, and accurate English.
- Quality Assurance: Ensuring the fidelity, tone, and context of the original audio is preserved. Reviewing and editing transcriptions and translations for grammatical and contextual accuracy.
- Confidentiality: Adhering to strict data protection policies and maintaining the confidentiality of all project materials.
Deliverables:
- Complete and error-free Amharic transcripts formatted in Word.
- High-quality English translations aligned with the provided templates.
- Timely submission of all deliverables by the agreed deadline (no later than February 28, 2025).
Duration: A maximum of two months for completing and submission of all transcripts and translated versions.
Duration and Workload: The contract will run from January 1, 2025, to February 28, 2025, with an estimated workload of 20–25 hours’ audios for on-time submission of all transcripts and translated versions.
About You
Minimum Qualifications:
Educational Background:
- At least Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, or related fields.
Professional Experience:
- Proven experience in transcription and translation, particularly in Amharic and English.
- Familiarity with public health or research-related content is preferred.
Technical Competencies:
- Strong transcription and translation skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to accurately transcribe spoken words into written text.
- Knowledge of tools for managing time codes in transcription.
- Proficiency in managing audio files of varying quality, accents, and lengths.
- Strong ability to translate content while maintaining context and meaning.
- Experience in localizing content for cultural and contextual relevance.
- Advanced knowledge of Amharic and English grammar, spelling, and syntax.
- Subject matter expertise and familiarity with health-specific terminologies.
Soft Skills:
- Excellent time management and organizational abilities.
- Effective communication and ability to collaborate with a diverse team.
- Excellent attention to detailto ensure accuracy in transcriptions and translation without loss of context or meaning.
Evaluation Criteria:
Applicants will be assessed based on:
- Relevant professional experience and qualifications through credentials review (40%).
- Quality of sample work submitted (30%).
- Language proficiency in Amharic and English (20%).
- Availability and ability to meet deadlines (10%).
This recruitment will involve an interview of the applicants for the position. Shortlisted candidates will be required to take a transcription and translation test.
Terms and Conditions:
- Contract Type: Freelance/Part-time contractor.
- Payment Terms: Payment will be made per audio hour transcribed and translated based on agreement.
- Confidentiality: The contractor must sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) before starting work to ensure compliance with AHRI’s data security protocols.
