Job summary

Responsible for the treatment, planning and technical supervision of all health programming at the Berahle refugee HC level. As it is necessary represent the organization technically in the camp, regional and national level, coordinates with technical stakeholders and donors, identifies areas of improvement in quality and work together with health and nutrition manager.

S/he oversee the proper coordination of Emergency health and Nutrition Response together with the health and nutrition manager.  S/he is responsible to discharge technical services relating to medical treatment, overall project Planning, implementation, and coordination. Support MTI Health and Nutrition Staff at the field level for the smooth and accurate running of the health and nutrition related interventions in Berahle refugee HC of Afar region specifically direct health and nutrition services for refugees, vulnerable communities, health system strengthening and community health system strengthening interventions, capacity building and supervision following the national protocol. To provide operational guidance to project staff member, and to strengthen Emergency health and Nutrition project in Afar, Berahle refugee.

Job responsibilities:

Medical / Technical

  • Provide consultations with diagnosis and treatment of illnesses based on the guidelines in Ethiopia and focusing initially on Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI).
  • Support the treatment of co-infections in children diagnosed with severe acute malnutrition and referred to an appropriate outpatient treatment program.
  • Provide appropriate referrals to the medical doctor or to the relevant referral sites in a timely fashion without delays
  • Prescribe medications and instruct patients on correct usage based on guidelines.
  • Ensure medical supplies are available and support the projection of needs.
  • Provide patient education and instruct on prevention methods for illness, proper nutrition, and hygiene.
  • Compile weekly and monthly reports required by the Ministry of Health as well as UNHCR/PRM/RRS and provide to the clinic in-charge.
  • Follow EPI routine/campaigns sessions at clinic and catchment
  • Follow infection, prevention, and control protocols through maintaining good hand hygiene and appropriately using personal protective equipment
  • Ensure the Safeguarding of program participants and employees through promoting an environment of awareness and upholding the code of conduct provisions of Medical Teams Protection from Sexual Exploitation & Abuse, Child & Vulnerable Adult protection, and harassment-free workplace policies.

Quality Management

  • Aiming to achieve the highest quality programming possible within the challenging context of Afar Region , Ethiopia
  • Ensure all patients are treated based on the Guidelines of the Ministry of Health and the IMCI guidelines
  • Ensure rational use of drugs such that only those essential for treatment are prescribed. Do not over prescribe.
  • Provide compassionate and respectful care to all patients who present to the clinic
  • Support other staff and colleagues to maintain good infection control practices to prevent spread of illnesses within the clinic and among the staff.

  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment, disposing of waste and sharps appropriately.

About You

Education, licenses, & certification:

  • Medical Doctor 

Experience

  •  Doctor of medicine (MD).
  • Postgraduate training in Public Health is an added advantage.
  • At least 3 years of practical work experience after qualification in a related field . 
  • NGO experience inclusive of emergency Health and nutrition programs.  
  • Computer literate, especially MS Word and Excel 
  • Good knowledge of written and spoken English languages. Afar Af language has an added advantage 
  • Familiarity with program area is highly desired 

Knowledge, skills & abilities

KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of humanitarian principles and operations and project cycle management.
  • Knowledge of [Country] MoH, WHO, and UN health systems and policies.
  • Strong knowledge of evidenced based practices in health in humanitarian settings.
  • Basic knowledge of principles and current approaches to monitoring and evaluation in relief and development programs. 
  • Excellent communicator .

Skills:

  • Skilled in communications using email, applications including teams, and whatsapp
  • Skilled in project cycle management
  • Skilled in capacity building and mobilizing staff to achieve a common goal.
  • Skilled in relationship building with the ability to liaise with multiple partner agencies.
  • Skilled in using HIS and HMIS database systems. 
  • Skilled in data analysis and writing proposals and reports. 
  • Skilled at using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

Physical conditions                                                                                                                                                                    

This position requires frequent travel to health facilities located in remote areas with very basic living conditions.
